Carat - Aucoin Hart Weighs In
Carat is probably the most familiar term when it comes to buying a diamond. But many people have no idea exactly what this term means. Carat is a unit of weight for diamonds. The term carat evolved from the carob seed, which was used in ancient times as a comparison weight, since it was relatively consistent in size and weight. Today, one carat is equal to 0.2 gram. Diamonds under one carat are often discussed in terms of "points" – with 100 points equal to one carat.
It is important to know that a one-carat diamond is much more rare and more expensive than a group of several smaller diamonds, which combined add up to one carat in total weight (with all other factors equal).
Diamonds are accurately weighed when they are not mounted. At Aucoin Hart, our diamonds are weighed carefully on a calibrated electronic scale. Our diamonds are also weighed according to the international standard for rounding-up weight, which is stricter than the US standard.
Remember that the balance of the 4C's is the key factor to determining the value of your diamond.
